Becoming an architect

Posted May 13th, 2020

There three main ways of becoming an architect in Ontario.

Foreign trained architects can contact the Canadian Architectural Certification Board to start the process.   Link to CACB

One can attend a school of architecture and undertake subsequent interning and writing of professional examinations.  Look at the websites of the various schools for more information.  Here are links to some of the nearby schools:
University of Toronto School of Architecture
Carleton University School of Architecture
University of Waterloo School of Architecture
Ryerson Architecture

Or one can go through the RAIC Syllabus program, run by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, which combines full time work experience with distance learning and in-person studio instruction.  This enables people who may be already employed in architects offices or wish to do so to work towards becoming fully qualified architects.  This alternative may be attractive to people who may not be able to afford the money or the time to become full-time architecture students, or who already have university qualifications.
